Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our regularly scheduled meeting date for May falls on a holiday weekend, so please note the change: we will meet Sunday, June 1 at 4 pm at the church.
We need knitters and crocheters to help fill our many requests for shawls. The needs are many and the stitchers are few. If you can spare a few hours a week you can be part of a very fulfilling ministry.
If you are interested in starting a prayer shawl ministry, we suggest you visit the "founding" website at http://www.shawlministry.com/. That site contains everything you need to understand what a prayer shawl ministry can be, how to get started, knitting & crocheting patterns, etc.
You are also welcome to join us at any of our meetings, which are held the 4th Sunday of every month at 4 p.m. at the church, 2 Neosho (South Avenue & Neosho St). We start with prayer, bless shawls completed & in progress, and help each other learn to knit and crochet.
Directions for knitting a shawl: 3 skeins Lion Brand Homespun yarn Cast on an odd number of multiple of three - 51 or 57 typically work well. Knit 3, purl 3 across. Repeat until shawl is desired length - usually takes 2 1/2 skeins. Or, knit every row. Either pattern is beautiful. Other patterns - or shapes - may be used, such as triangular: cast on 2, K2 and add 1, turn. K3, add one, turn. Continue increasing at the end of each row until you have 108 stitches - or it appears as wide as you'd like. Cast off & add fringe. |
What should we do with odds & ends of yarn? Knit a "Joseph's" shawl of alternating stripes in complementary colors! This is a favorite among our male recipients. |
